Mrs. Luciller W. Scates

“May the Work I’ve Done Speak for Me” Sister Luciller W. Scates was born to the late Major and Sophie Woods in Dallas County, Selma, Alabama. She was one of three children, a Brother whom preceded her in death and her Sister, Mrs. Leila A. Swift, who reside in Atlanta, GA. She passed from labor to reward on June 17, 2019. After graduating high school, Sister Scates made a leap of faith and moved from Selma, Alabama to Alexandria, VA to start a new life. It is in Alexandria, VA that she met and married Mr. Thomas H. Scates, Sr. (preceded her in death). To this union was born one child, a son, Thomas H. Scates, Jr. (preceded her in death). Shortly after moving to Alexandria, VA, Sister Scates, secured work with the U.S. Government and continued working there until her retirement. Sister Scates accepted the Lord as her Savior early in her life. Growing up she was active in church and BSU, Baptist Student Union in Selma, Alabama. She planted her spiritual roots at Mt. Jezreel Baptist Church and joined in 1949, under the leadership of Reverend David L. Miles. She was a member for over 70 years. She loved the Lord & faithfully served the Lord in a number of ministries at Mt. Jezreel, that included the Senior Choir, Gospel Chorus, Ever Ready Chorus, Mass Choir, Henry Houston Ensemble, the Helping Hand Club, Baptist Convention Club, Ushers Choir that traveled along the east Coast to perform under the direction of Mrs. Sharon Young, a devout member of Sunday School and Bible Study. Sister Scates loved her family and friends. She enjoyed traveling, sewing, cooking delicious meals and baking great treats. We enjoyed eating just as much as she enjoyed preparing. And she did it all with love. Sister Scates had an infectious smile, laugh and spirit. She will truly be missed. We can rest assured that she is the arms of her Heavenly Father. She leaves to cherish her memory, One Sister, Mrs. Leila A.
