Ms. Lois Ann Diggs

Lois Ann Diggs was born on December 18, 1941, in Alexandria, VA. She was the third oldest and only daughter of eight children born to the union of the late Mabel and Julian Diggs. She passed away peacefully at home on January 05, 2026, lovingly surrounded by family. Lois grew up in the “Seminary” and “Mud Town” areas of Alexandria where she attended public school and graduated from Parker-Gray High School. She went on to complete weekend courses in business administration at Howard University. On September 18, 1962, Lois married the late Clarence “Bunny” Quarles and from their union, they had four adoring children, daughter Michelle, and sons Kevin (Niecy), Greg (Yvette), and Ricky (Darlene). Throughout her professional career, Lois dedicated herself to working with mission-driven organizations including the American Bible Society, Central Union Mission, and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. She also contributed her skills as a transcriber for the Social Security Administration. Her most notable professional tenure included 35 years of successful, diligent, and inspiring service at The National Community Pharmacist Association (NCPA), where she retired in 2015 as the Director of Corporate Sponsorships for Meetings and Conventions. Lois’s steadfast and unconditional love for her family was at the heart of her character and resonated with everyone who had the privilege to know her. As the cherished matriarch of the Diggs and Quarles families, she took immense pride in being “Mom,” “Gamma,” “Sister,” “Auntie” and “Friend”— roles she embraced wholeheartedly and with great joy. Her family and friends could always count on her for encouragement, unparalleled fun, and when needed, a few honest and sometimes humorous “tell it like it is” words – which were always guided by love and a want of the very best for her family. Lois routinely opened her home as the family gathering place for holidays and celebrations where everyone was welcomed with open arms. Her home was often filled with the laughter and liveliness of her cherished grandchildren and great grandchildren. Lois’s warmth, wisdom, and infectious charm created a nurturing environment that fostered deep family bonds and memories, making her an irreplaceable cornerstone of her loved ones’ lives. Inspired by her elder brother, Fred Diggs, Lois took the lead in organizing the largest Diggs Family Reunion in 2014, bringing together hundreds of relatives from extended branches of the family. As the dedicated historian of the Diggs family, she devoted countless hours to researching and documenting the family's ancestry, ultimately publishing “The Diggs Family Heritage and Album” in 2020. Lois continued to play a vital role in planning large reunions and was committed to fostering connections with younger generations, ensuring that the Diggs legacy remained vibrant and united. Lois was blessed to live a well-traveled life, having taken many domestic and international trips over the decades. In her free time, she loved to cook and discover new recipes, garden, spend time with life-long friends, and socialize with her Dumfries Senior Group. When she was feeling daring, she enjoyed trips to the casino where she maxed out at $20 on the penny machines. Lois maintained a deep-rooted commitment to her faith as a lifelong member of Oakland Baptist Church in Alexandria, VA. After relocating to Dumfries, VA in 2022, she was determined to find a local church community where she could serve and share her gifts. Encouraged by her childhood friend, Alfonzo “Butch” Terrell, Lois visited the historic Little Union Baptist Church and officially joined as a member on March 5, 2023. She enthusiastically devoted herself to the church’s kitchen and drama ministries, participated regularly in Bible study and Sunday school, and formed lasting connections with fellow congregants. Her church family played a significant role in supporting Lois as she deepened her understanding of the Bible and strengthened her spiritual relationship with God. Lois is preceded in death by her parents, Mabel and Julian, and brothers Norman, David, William “Bill”, Frederick “Fred”, and Thomas “Tom”. She leaves behind three treasured brothers – Richard “Itsy” (Janice), Irving, and Michael (Flora); four dear children; 18 cherished grandchildren - Darren, Shannon (Seidale), Brandon (Mariah), Rashad, Javon (Monica), Ricky Jr., Dominick, Monique (deceased), Sabrina (Wesley), Brianna, Kiara, Chyna, Vashti, Tyra, Mikia, Mia, Aaron, and Marquise; 20 great-grandchildren – Amaya, Mia, Nicole, Darren Jr., Brandon Jr., Kai, Rhiley, Jackson, Maximus, Isaiah, Royal, Ella, Aaliyah, Aubri, Marliegh, Bryson, Carter, Caisyn, Ria, and Joy; and a large host of beloved nephews, nieces, cousins, step children, and sister friends.
