Mrs. Winifred Yvonne Grimes Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

In Remembrance of Our Beloved Winnie A life we loved, Winifred Yvonne Roberts Grimes came to close on May 15, 2023, at the Virginia Hospital Center. GOD kissed the pain away and called her to eternal rest. Born December 7, 1933, in Alexandria, Virginia, the eldest of two children born to the late Louis H. Roberts, Sr. and Louise Marie Brown. She was preceded in death by her brother Louis H. Roberts, Jr. and daughter Linda Denise Grimes. Winifred married the love of her life, the late Sandy T. Grimes on January 22, 1955. From that union were born four daughters. Sandra T. Grimes, Karen L. Grimes, Linda D. Grimes and Stacey D. Grimes. Cherished for her guidance, sacrifices, and unconditional love given daily. Winifred attended schools in Alexandria, graduating from Parker Gray High School in June 1949 and then attended the Cortez Peters Business School graduating in June 1951. After graduating from business school, she started working for the Federal Government in November 1951. During her career she worked for the Department of the Army; Department of Health, Education and Welfare; and Department of Defense, from which she retired in December 1989 after 31 years of Federal Service where she was awarded for many accomplishments. At the early age of eleven, Winifred joined Shiloh Baptist Church in 1944 and was a faithful member serving as a Sunday School teacher and pianist for the Junior department; worked with many ministries – Tape, History, EverReady Club, Hospitality, Gospel Chorus, Shiloh Newsletter, Senior Ministry, Mid-day Bible Study and the Shiloh Federal Credit Union. Winifred enjoyed traveling and was a long-time member and President of the Travelin’ Dolls Bowling Club, which was formed from the Shiloh Baptist Bowling League of which she was a member for 30 years. She loved working crossword puzzles word games and jigsaw puzzles which have been framed and left to cherish, hanging beautifully in her home. Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Sandra Grimes-Jones, Karen Grimes, Stacey (Erik) Grimes-Dodson. 2 grandchildren Coby Turner and Sheena Jones: great-grandchildren Corina Turner, Rodney Turner, Gianna Turner, Kalib Wilson, Kyree Jones, Khole Jones and Kayin Nesbitt-Jones. Great-great granddaughter Da’liylah Turner. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, her Shiloh Baptist Church family and many devoted friends.
