Mrs. Mary Evelyn Douglas

Mary Evelyn Douglas was the first child of the late William and Evelyn Elsie (Comfort) Lindsey, of Orange and Spotsylvania Counties, Virginia. Her family and friends affectionately called her Mary Evelyn. While she was born in Alexandria, Virginia, she loved riding in the truck with her father and hound dog down to “the country”, i.e. Orange County, Virginia. She also found joy, as a child, staying the summers with her cousins, there in the country. Her mother, Evelyn believed in God and living a Godly life. She and Mary Evelyn worshipped at St. Joseph Catholic Church and Shiloh Baptist Church in Alexandria, Virginia. However, Shiloh Baptist Church has been the home church for Mary Evelyn for many years. William and Evelyn Lindsey believed in quality education. They sent Mary Evelyn to Martha Miller’s Kindergarten and St. Joseph Catholic School. Then, as Mary Evelyn pleaded, they sent her to Parker Gray High School. This is where she met the love of her life, John Howard Douglas. Family and friends affectionately called him Howard.Mary Evelyn and Howard married April 1961. Their children are Denise Carol Douglas, John Howard Douglas, Jr., and the late Akil Tremain Douglas. Since her graduation from Parker Gray High School and marriage, Mary Evelyn has worked for the federal government. She retired in July 2008, as a Grant Specialist for Health Education and Welfare (HEW). She developed many, many long lasting friends there. Mary Evelyn was such a friendly person. Upon meeting her, she was instantly family. She went on trips with her friends, to her friends’ family unions, birthday parties, super bowl parties, cook-outs, etc.… And, she loved music, especially Reggae. Don’t you know that she loved Jamaica. She’s been there so many times. She’s also traveled to Ghana, Barbados, Canada and States within the US with her family and friends. And, let’s not forget that she loved loved loved shopping, especially for clothes. So, without question, we are deeply saddened by our loss of her in our lives. To cherish these sweet memories of Mary Evelyn are her children Denise Carol Douglas and John Howard Douglas Jr.; her grandchildren whom she loved dearly Jonte` Denise Douglas, Tamiya Brianna Douglas, and Akira Evelyn Douglas; her brother Melvin Anthony Lindsey; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who she loved as family.
