Ms. Elva Blanche Clarke

I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith 2 Timothy 4:7 (KJV) A Life of Faith, Family, Love, and Service Elva Blanche Clarke was born on May 16, 1937, in Buckingham, Virginia, to the late Eugene T. Miller, Sr., and Louise B. Miller. As the oldest of her siblings, she embraced the role of a loving and caring sister and family matriarch. Her life was defined by faith, family, strength, courage, compassion, and love. Elva attended the Buckingham County Public School System and graduated from Carter G. Woodson High School. She was an all-around athlete throughout her schooling and was an exceptional basketball player and accomplished pole vaulter. Upon graduation, she became a homemaker. A few years after graduation, Elva moved to Washington, D.C. She later relocated with her family to Alexandria, Virginia. While in Alexandria, she worked as a Teacher Assistant with the Alexandria City Public School System (ACPS), where she loved and cared for her students in the Business and Special Education Departments. She retired in 1999 after years of dedicated service. She later returned to ACPS as a volunteer with the School Booster Team and Grandparents Club. Elva accepted the Lord at an early age and was a member of Union Branch Baptist Church in her hometown of Avonia, Virginia. After relocating to Alexandria, Virginia, she joined St. John Baptist Church (SJBC), serving under the leadership of the late Rev. Dr. John W. Johnson and Rev. Dr. Phillip L. Pointer, Sr. During Dr. Pointer’s tenure, St. John Baptist Church became Providence St. Baptist Church (PSBC). She continued to serve under the leadership of Rev. Billy T. Staton, Jr. PSBC is now known as Nehemiah Family Worship Center (NFWC). While residing in Triangle, Virginia, in 2020, she became a member of Star Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Henry P. During, Jr. In 2022, she relocated to Columbus, Ohio. One morning, while enjoying breakfast and engaging in a casual conversation, she met her next pastors. Soon afterward, she visited and became a member of City of Grace under the leadership of Pastor Michael Young and Pastor Richard Jones. In 2025, Elva returned to the DMV area and reunited with Nehemiah Family Worship Center. Throughout her Christian journey, Elva served as a Sunday School teacher, Missionary, and member of the Pastor's Aid Committee and Flower Club. She sang with the Gospel Chorus and Mass Choir and was ordained as a deaconess. After years of faithful service, she was appointed as the leader of the deaconess ministry, where she trained many young women in ministry. She also served as church clerk and later became the executive assistant to Rev. Dr. Phillip L. Pointer, Sr., for ten years. She continued to hold various leadership positions within the church. Elva had a nurturing spirit and a heart for bringing people together. She loved cooking and family gatherings. She was also an avid sports fan who enjoyed watching college and professional basketball and football. Elva loved to travel, and her adventures took her across four continents: North America, Africa, Asia, and Europe. One of her most memorable experiences was walking the Damascus Road, a journey that beautifully connected her love of travel with her deep faith in God. She was a woman whose heart overflowed with boundless love and endless compassion, pouring herself out for everyone she met. With every word, she offered encouragement that lifted spirits; with every gesture, she shared wisdom that guided souls; and with every embrace, she radiated love that healed wounds and warmed even the coldest of hearts. Her unwavering support was a beacon of hope in her family, a guiding light in her church, a pillar in her community, and a sanctuary for anyone crying out for kindness and understanding. She believed in the power of caring, and in her presence, lives were forever touched and changed by the pure, passionate force of her generosity. Family was Elva’s greatest treasure. She leaves to cherish her memory her six children: Charles Clarke, Sr. (April), Darleen Medley, Arleen Armstrong (Andre), Carolyn Williams (Drue), Angela Clarke, and. James Clarke (Tiffany); 17 grandchildren: Rochelle Davis (John), Derrick Thompson, Corin Tuner, Darnell Thompson, Dominique Thompson, Michael Clarke, Chaz Clarke, Tajuana Smith, Nicholas Dilihay, Dezmund Clarke, Kendra Knight, Jeremiah Clarke, Isiah Clarke, Jadah Clarke, Charles Clarke, Jr., Christina Clarke, and Joshua Clarke; 11 great-grandchildren: Shaquille Taylor (Monica), Layla Sheffey, Dah’lila Clarke, Ni’yeal Fisher-Clarke, Aubree Smith, Austin Smith, De’Andre Clarke, Ezra Howard, Khye Billings, Dezmund Clarke, Jr., and De’Zhye Clarke; and one great-great-grandchild, Jason Taylor. She is also survived by her four siblings: Eugene Miller, Jr. (Zannie), Mary Eldridge (Clarence), Marshall Miller (Poni), and Roosevelt Miller (Sadie); brother-in-law, Robert Toney; sister-in-law, Ann Miller; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, church family, countless friends, and loved ones. She was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene T. Miller, Sr., and Louise B. Miller; grandson, Carnezze Clarke; great-grandson, De’Leon Clarke; brother, Joseph Miller, Sr.; and sister, Christine Toney. Elva’s life cannot be measured simply by the number of years she lived. Her life is measured by the love she gave, the people she served, the family she nurtured, the faith she demonstrated, and the lives she touched. Her legacy of faith, love, service, and family will live on through the generations she leaves behind.
